Art Beyond Words: Inspire Arts CT Hosts Its First Pop-Up Art Event with CCC
Celebrating creativity, community engagement, and the artistic voice of brain injury survivor LaRey Pablo
Inspire Arts CT recently reached an exciting milestone by hosting its first pop-up arts event in collaboration with Connecticut Community Care, bringing together creativity, community engagement, and the power of artistic expression. The event provided a unique opportunity for LaRey Pablo, an accomplished artist and stroke survivor, to share her creative process with care managers associated with Connecticut’s Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Waiver Program.
For LaRey, the event represented more than an opportunity to teach an artistic technique. It was a chance to share her talents, connect with others through her work, and demonstrate how creativity can open new avenues for communication, confidence, and community participation following a brain injury.
Finding a Creative Voice After Stroke
LaRey Pablo's artistic journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the ability to discover new possibilities following life-changing neurological challenges.
After experiencing a stroke at age 25, LaRey faced significant physical and communication difficulties, including hemiparalysis and expressive aphasia. Her recovery required her to relearn fundamental skills, including walking and communicating. Despite these challenges, LaRey continued to explore her creative interests and developed an artistic approach that allows her to express ideas, interests, and perspectives through visual art.
A self-taught painter and collage artist, LaRey draws inspiration from familiar cultural imagery, music, and subjects that capture her imagination. Through her distinctive techniques, she transforms these influences into original works that reflect her individual perspective and creative vision.
While expressive aphasia can make verbal communication challenging, artistic expression offers LaRey another way to share her ideas with the world. Her work demonstrates that communication extends beyond spoken language and that creative talent can flourish even when neurological changes alter how a person interacts with their environment.

Sharing Creativity with Connecticut's ABI Waiver Community
The recent pop-up event brought LaRey together with care managers associated with Connecticut's ABI Waiver Program, giving participants an opportunity to learn directly from an artist whose lived experience reflects many of the challenges and possibilities encountered by individuals living with acquired brain injuries.
Through the event, LaRey shared her unique artistic technique and invited attendees to engage with the creative process firsthand. This experience created an opportunity for connection that extended beyond traditional conversations about disability, rehabilitation, and community-based support.
By taking on the role of instructor, LaRey was able to demonstrate her skills, communicate her ideas through art, and share her knowledge with others. The experience also highlighted the importance of recognizing individuals with brain injuries not simply as recipients of services, but as artists, educators, contributors, and active participants in their communities.
For care managers, the event offered a valuable perspective on how meaningful community activities can support the goals of the ABI Waiver Program, including independence, personal development, social participation, and opportunities to pursue individual interests.
Building Confidence Through Community Engagement
One of the most meaningful outcomes of the event was the renewed confidence LaRey gained through sharing her artistic abilities with a wider audience.
For individuals living with acquired brain injuries, the effects of neurological changes can extend beyond physical limitations and communication difficulties. Changes in confidence, social participation, and opportunities to contribute to the community can also influence a person's sense of identity and independence.
Opportunities such as this pop-up event create space for individuals to demonstrate their abilities, explore new roles, and build relationships through shared interests. For LaRey, teaching her technique allowed her to move beyond the role of participant and become the person sharing knowledge, guiding others, and introducing them to her creative approach.
This is an important part of the Inspire Arts philosophy: supporting artists in developing their talents while creating opportunities for their work and ideas to be experienced and appreciated by the broader community.n, Delivered

A New Chapter for Inspire Arts CT
As the first pop-up arts event organized by Inspire Arts CT, the collaboration with CCC represents an exciting step toward expanding opportunities for artists with disabilities to engage with their communities in meaningful and inclusive ways.
Inspire Arts CT, an initiative of Supported Living Group, supports artists living with disabilities by encouraging creative expression, developing artistic skills, and creating opportunities for community participation and recognition. Through its programming, artists are supported in exploring their interests, developing their abilities, and sharing their work beyond the studio environment.
The success of this initial event reinforces the value of partnerships with community organizations and professionals who recognize the importance of creating opportunities for people with disabilities to contribute their talents and perspectives.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ron and the CCC team for embracing the pop-up event concept, supporting the gallery refresh, and helping create an environment where LaRey's creativity could be shared and celebrated.
Their involvement helped transform an idea into a meaningful community experience, supporting LaRey's confidence while advancing the broader goals of inclusion, independence, and participation for individuals living with acquired brain injuries.
Looking Ahead: More Opportunities to Create, Connect, and Inspire
LaRey's experience reminds us that life after a brain injury is not defined solely by what has changed or what may be difficult. It is also shaped by the opportunities people have to discover new strengths, pursue meaningful interests, and share their abilities with others.
Through artistic expression, LaRey has developed a way to communicate her ideas, showcase her talents, and connect with people in ways that extend beyond spoken language. Her participation in Inspire Arts CT's first pop-up event demonstrates the potential for creative programming to support confidence, personal growth, and meaningful community engagement.
As Inspire Arts CT continues to explore opportunities for exhibitions, workshops, and community collaborations, we look forward to creating more experiences that celebrate the creativity and contributions of artists living with disabilities.
At Inspire Arts CT, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to create, contribute, and be recognized for their talents. LaRey's story is a powerful reminder that art can build connections, open doors, and give creative voices the opportunity to be seen and celebrated.
