Mike Waters | Horticulture, Woodworking & Creative Inspiration

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Mike Waters brings a diverse background in horticulture, landscaping, woodworking, craftsmanship, music, and design to Inspire Arts CT. After relocating to Connecticut, Mike has continued to explore the creative connections between working with his hands, nature, and community.

Mike's passion for plants and horticulture began at an early age while spending time with his mother, helping in her garden and experiencing her work at a local nursery. Those early experiences developed into a lasting appreciation for plants and eventually led Mike to pursue a career in horticulture and landscape installation. His understanding of plants, natural environments, and landscape design continues to influence the way he approaches creative projects.

Music has also played an important role throughout Mike's life. Inspired by his father, Mike developed a deep appreciation for live music and the cultural experiences surrounding it. His interest has taken him across the United States and around the world, providing opportunities to experience different musical traditions, communities, and cultures. These experiences have helped shape his broader appreciation for creativity, individuality, and cultural expression.

Mike's creative interests expanded further during his time in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked with a trim carpentry company on Kiawah Island. The experience strengthened his knowledge of woodworking, finish carpentry, craftsmanship, and design, giving him another hands-on creative outlet and a deeper appreciation for the skill involved in transforming natural materials into functional and visually engaging creations.

Today, Mike enjoys bringing these diverse interests together through his work with Inspire Arts CT's horticulture and woodcraft programs. He particularly enjoys sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with others, encouraging participants to explore their own creativity while developing practical skills and discovering new possibilities.

For Mike, creativity can be found everywhere—in a garden, a piece of wood, a landscape, a song, or a new experience. His approach reflects the philosophy of Inspire Arts CT: that creative expression, hands-on learning, nature, and meaningful connection can provide opportunities for personal growth and community engagement.

Outside of his creative and horticultural pursuits, Mike enjoys disc golf, hiking with his two dogs, traveling, experiencing live music, and spending time with family.
